Genetically Altered Crops
According to Nina Fedoroff at the New York Times and the Environmental Protection Agency, a warmer climate is eating away the world’s crop yields and the world’s population is skyrocketing. Furthermore, the United Nations believes there will be one to three billion more people to feed by the middle of the century. According to Fedoroff and the Environmental Protection Agency, more research and effort must be put into producing genetically altered crops. Expanding her argument, Federoff believes, based on the current twenty five years of research and bodies of evidence regarding already genetically altered crops, it is completely safe and implores regulatory agencies to allow companies to do as they please with crops. These crops are resistant to parasites, do not need as much pesticides (safer for environment) and produce higher yields. However, I can’t help but think about the many false paradigms throughout the history of science and the decades it took to discover them. I cannot, in good mind, support the all out repeal of regulations regarding genetically altered crops. What do you think?
